Objetivo del proyecto

Improve financial skills, attitudes, and practices for the economic empowerment of women living in rural and peri-urban areas through digital and interactive training; as well as facilitating their access to the financial system.

Grupo de impacto

Women and men over 16 years old who reside in the areas targeted by the project. Most of the participants are linked to other CARE Peru projects such as Mujeres en la Empresa (Women in Business) (2019), Vamos piuranos (Come on Piuranos) (2019), Ella Alimenta al Mundo (She feeds the world) (2020) and the soup kitchens of Alimenta la Fuerza de ella (Feed her strength) (2020).

Innovación

The contribution to SDG 9: Industry, innovation, and infrastructure thanks to the development of a financial education program through ICT. People in a state of vulnerability learned to install WhatsApp, create groups, and communicate through it, as well as to use videoconferencing tools. In addition, the trainings were carried out through the distribution of tablets in homes with the self-learning application LISTA Peru (digital solution designed by Fundación Capital (Capital Foundation)). All these activities strengthened the population’s confidence in the use of technologies.

Fortalecimiento de la sociedad civil

  • Development of workshops with financial institutions in the communities for the dissemination of financing sources that strengthen the economic reactivation due to the economic crisis generated by COVID-19.
  • Strengthening of leadership in existing business associations and in new groups formed for the dissemination of financial information and management of digital tools.
  • Promotion of the gender approach and co-responsibility among the participants.

Modelos efectivos

The adaptation of the mobile financial advisory component that not only addressed issues in this area, but also disseminated content that helped families to reactivate the economy in times of COVID-19, as well as issues of co-responsibility and emotional support. In this way, an empathic approach was built with the population in a digital environment.

Aprendizajes

  • Use of all means of communication to reach the population:
    1) Through phone calls, especially to those who only have analog cell phones.
    2) Sending messages through WhatsApp and SMS groups.
    3) Dissemination of content on community radio through spots, microprograms, etc.
  • Adaptation of educational content to more agile, interactive, and preferably oral versions. In addition, the difficulties experienced by the population should be considered: digital connectivity, lack of memory in cell phones, use of a cell phone for the whole family or not having any telephone equipment. All these factors demand a redefinition of the educational content to be disseminated.
  • Importance of strengthening and training community leaderships so that women are agents of change that make it possible for their peers to learn about financial education and digital issues.
